My favourite things about living in halls

By bzellie 01 Mar 2019

Living in halls was probably one of the best aspects of going to uni, so if ever anyone needs convincing to live in halls, then this is the place to be convinced (no, I promise I'm not on commission).

Don't get me wrong, moving away from home and the thought of going to live with 5 complete strangers was a little daunting. Ok, no, in fact, it was very daunting: What if they don't like me? What if they aren't into the same things as me? ...were just a few things running through my mind in the lead up to 'move in day'.

After realising everyone was going into the same boat, the nerves went and excitement took over. If I could write about all the things I loved about halls you'd be here all day, so I'll keep it short and sweet.

The social aspect tops the list of favourite things, I do like my own space, and don't mind my own company from time to time, but there's nothing better than having all your friends in one place. The morning after the night before was the best, when you all cram onto someone's single bed and all laugh about your antics.

The 'are you coming out tonight?' question that surrounds student halls, is something that I can assure you will get asked almost every night. Even if you have approximately £3 in your bank account you'll somehow always make it work, I definitely did anyway.

I still find it crazy how you can go from being complete strangers to being best friends within two weeks and knowing every aspect of each other's lives. I'm a firm believer in 'everything happens for a reason', and I was lucky enough to be put in the halls I was to meet the friends that will now be my friends for life - sounds so cliche I'm sorry.

As you can probably tell, the social side of halls made my uni experience, but apart from that, another reason I loved halls was being able to roll out of bed into a lecture. We've all been there, rocking up looking like you've been dragged through a bush backwards, no? Just me then. This was a regular look for me, but being able to get out of bed 10 minutes before my lecture started was an absolute Godsend.

I'm not a very good cook and my flatmates would definitely agree, so living with other people made me venture out, try new things and cook new things. My mum was shocked at all the things I had been eating, not to mention how pleased she was that I had now stopped eating chicken goujons every night for dinner.

If you're unsure what to do about next year then just remember there are so many people in the same boat and you aren't restricted to the people in your flat, go and meet everyone!
